The Countdown country profile presents in one place the best and latest evidence to enable an assessment of progress in improving reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) and achieving MDGs 4 and 5. The profile presents the most recent available information at the time it was published on selected demographic measures, coverage rates for priority interventions across the continuum of care, and indicators of equity, policy support, human resources, and financial flows. Missing values, or estimates that are more than five years old, indicate an urgent need for concerted action to increase data collection efforts.
During 2014 and 2015, a Malawi-led research team is conducting a Countdown Country Case Study to better understand the country’s progress on elements of RMNCH. The study’s results are expected to be published during 2015, and updated information on the case study will be posted here.
The final Countdown to 2015 country profile for Malawi — a full two-page profile featuring a range of coverage, equity, policy, health systems, and financing indicators – was published in October 2015 in A Decade of Tracking Progress for Maternal, Newborn and Child Survival: The 2015 Report, which was launched at the Global Maternal & Newborn Health Conference in Mexico City.
As a supplement to the 2015 Report, Countdown’s Equity Working Group produced updated equity country profiles, containing extra information on selected maternal and child health indicators, disaggregated according to sex, region of residence, wealth quintile, maternal education, and country region.

Countdown also produced full, two-page country profiles as part of its reports in 2014, 2012, 2010, 2008, and 2005, and equity profiles in 2014 and 2012. Abbreviated one-page profiles, customized to showcase the core indicators selected by the Commission on Information and Accountability for Women’s and Children’s Health, were published in 2013 and 2012.
In order to provide in-country audiences with a clear, detailed understanding of the data in the country profile, Countdown developed a customized (and customizable) PowerPoint presentation, in which each chart on the 2014 profile is presented on an individual slide, together with a brief explanation of the indicator presented.
