Countdown to 2015 country case studies: analysing progress towards maternal and child survival in the Millennium Development Goal era reflects on the successful country case studies that illuminated the progress and gaps during the MDGs, and charts the new ground that Countdown to 2030 will cover. Accountability remains prominent on the global health agenda thanks in part to the evidence and analysis published by Countdown to 2015. As the papers in this supplement show, the research that the new Countdown undertakes will be more relevant, sophisticated, and rooted in developing countries where the evidence is urgently needed.
